Murphy arrived last Saturday, bright and early - before daylight actually. He was in good shape, though he was calling to all his new friends still on the horse-van. I walked him around until they left, letting him look at his new home and eat a little grass. We also put a blanket on him - whether it was nerves or cold, he was shivering.
Once they left, I put him in his new digs - the turnout and barn. He quickly discovered that electric fencing bites and has left that alone. He was still a little agitated; missing friends and feeling alone. Our neighbor came that afternoon to lend us their pony for the winter! They are getting along great and Murphy is much calmer.
Pretty much every day I excercise Murphy - either riding or on the longe-line. He is a little out of shape, so it doesn't take too much to work him. He's also getting used to having to pick up his feet higher to step over the grassy tufts in the field. Back in California, we mostly rode on hard-packed roads or trails, so this is new for him.
Here are some pictures of him and the pony and the barn:
"Brrr, it's still cold!" Notice the big round haybale! That's the barn behind them.
It warms up nice in the afternoon.
"Oh goody! I'm gonna steal some alfalfa!"
