A big step
Wayne went to the hospital today. He had been at home, in hospice care. The hospice people have been so nice and supportive as well as useful. They set us up with the equipment we needed, and showed us
how to do what we could to let him be comfortable. But the last day or
so we just couldn't get him comfortable. He was agitated nearly all
the time. We gave him medicines, and those didn't help for long. Last
night was really bad for all of us. We called Hospice this morning and told them we needed Wayne to go to the hospital, and they arranged for the local ambulance to come for him.
I remembered the lady from when they came out because Wayne had fainted. One of the emt's is a guy we know from the feed coop - he helps us load our corn. They brought along two other guys to help load Wayne into the ambulance - one I recognised as the owner of the local grocery, the other was a stranger to me. They were so sweet and took good care of him as they loaded him onto the ambulance.
Dick followed in the car and got him checked in and took care of the paperwork. He watched to see him get settled in. We discovered part of the problem - poor Wayne had to pee really bad, and couldn't. There was no way we would've known how to handle that, even if we knew the problem.
We went in to visit him tonight. He looks so much more peaceful. The nurses are shifting him every so often so he doesn't get sores; they talk to him in case he can hear; they have his legs supported with pillows and he is content to have a blanket on. (With us, he pulled off any clothes or sheets we put on him.) We are convinced that this is the best we can do for him.
